TOYOTA DUAL CAB UTE STANDARD EQUIPMENT:
Chrome on the wheels, bumpers, mirrors and grille, carpet on the floor and
cloth on the seats. Then there's power steering, power windows and mirrors,
central locking, variable-speed intermittent wipers, digital clock, illuminated
ignition barrel and a glove box with a key lock! Next thing they'll be adding
a vanity mirror, mate.
TOYOTA DUAL CAB UTE SAFETY:
Front seat-belt pre-tensioners, dual air bags and anti-lock brakes are a $2,560
package.
TOYOTA DUAL CAB UTE CABIN:
High quality plastics mean an excellent fit and finish. Toyota builds its
utes to the same high standard as it builds Camrys. Buttons and dials are
well-positioned and easy to use. This "luxury" ute misses out on the trademark
front quarter-window flaps.
TOYOTA DUAL CAB UTE SEATING:
Licensed to carry five, but there's really only enough room for four burly
blokes - in comfort. (You can't get too close to The Fellas.) Rear knee room
is slightly better than the previous model - which means the tray's slightly
smaller.
TOYOTA DUAL CAB UTE ENGINE:
Choice of 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol (108kW) or 3.0-litre diesel (65kW).
The petrol engine has plenty of grunt (torque) which means fewer gear changes
in traffic jam crawls. Toyota claims this engine is the most powerful in its
class but conveniently forgets to mention the competition have V6 engines.
TOYOTA DUAL CAB UTE TRANSMISSION:
Five-speed manual only. Solid, precise gearshift. No complaints.
TOYOTA DUAL CAB UTE STEERING:
Thick-rimmed steering wheel comfortable to grip. Not too heavy, not too light
power-assistance makes negotiating car parks - and building sites - a cinch.
Turning circle 12.2 metres (good, for a 4WD).
TOYOTA DUAL CAB UTE RIDE:
More jiggles than a teabag on a bumpy road - compared with a conventional
car. By 4WD-ute standards, though, it's a huge leap forward in ride comfort,
mostly thanks to the independent front suspension. Toyota says utes are one
of the most challenging vehicles to make comfortable because their characteristics
change depending on the load.
TOYOTA DUAL CAB UTE HANDLING:
Quality Bridgestone tyres make the SR5 less nervous than its skinnier-tyred
siblings, although caution on corners is still required.
TOYOTA DUAL CAB UTE BRAKES:
Front discs and rear drums. Nice, precise pedal feel. Rear discs would be
appreciated.
TOYOTA DUAL CAB UTE ANTI-THEFT:
None, apart from door locks (and the dog in the back).
TOYOTA DUAL CAB UTE AUDIO SYSTEM:

provides above average sound through four speakers.
